世界の国歌について紹介します。
今回は、アメリカ合衆国の国歌『星条旗』を紹介します。

絶えず守り続ける国民であれ
天に救われた土地が
勝利と平和で祝福されんことを願わん

勝利の歓喜の中、星条旗は翻る

成り立ち
『星条旗』は英国からの独立の後、1812年から始まった米英戦争の最中であった1814年に、メリーランド州で弁護士を営んでいたフランシス・スコット・キーによって作詞されました。
戦争捕虜の交換交渉のために停泊していた英国艦隊を訪れた彼は、英艦隊がマックヘンリー要塞に向けて総攻撃を行う光景を目撃します。
25時間もの間艦砲射撃を続けた英軍でしたが、マックヘンリー要塞の上空には、朝焼けの中に星条旗がはためいて見え、アメリカ側が死守したことを知りました。
感動した彼は、「マックヘンリー要塞の防衛」という詩を詠みました。
楽曲は、当時アメリカや英国で人気の高かった『天国のアナクレオン』という曲が基になっています。
1798年に初めてアメリカの新聞に楽譜が掲載されて以来、様々な歌詞が付けられ、皆に親しまれる流行歌となっていました。
『星条旗』が正式な国歌として制定されたのは、1931年のことでした。
